"phone"

Meaning: The root "phone" means "sound" or "sounds".

Pronunciation: "Phone" is pronounced normally as in "telephone". Sometimes the "o" is like the "not".

Example 1: Of course, a "telephone" is a device that can send sound a long (tele) distance.

Example 2: A "microphone" is a device that lets us send a small (micro) sound so that everyone in a large audience can hear the sound.

Example 3: "Phonology" is the study of all of the sounds of a language.

Other useful words:
homophones - words that look different but have the same sound (such as "hi" and "high)
anglophone - somebody who can speak English
symphony - a big group of musicians (they make great sounds!)
xylophone - a type of musical instrument
