Effective Vocabulary Building for ESL Students

Learn English Suffixes, Group 5:
"-ium, -ary, -ory"

Meaning: These endings show that a word is "a place for" doing something.

Example 1: An "aquarium" is a place for sea animals. (Like a zoo, but with water!) "We took the children to the zoo and they loved watching the dolphins and penguins play in the water".

Example 2: An "auditorium" is a place to listen to a concert or live music. "The auditorium was silent until the musicians appeared".

Example 3: Of course, a place to read is in a "library".

Other useful words:
laboratory - a place to study science
museum - a place to keep things from the past
stadium - a place for playing, and watching, sports
